Passion for Golf

First, my condolences to the Family and Friends of Andy. I met Andy in the early/mid 1960's at Langara golf course where I worked. He had taken up the game at an age that wasn't conducive to improving your score.

Andy took several lessons and was always looking for tips from the good younger players that were around.

As passionate as he was about improving his game we knew that the  30" waist that was supporting his massive 48 " chest was never going to give Andy the flexibility and timing needed to hit that little white ball. But persevere he did.

A story I remember happened around 1966 at Langara. It was a rainey spring day and no one was out playing. The usual crowd of locals and several of the downtown westside characters were hanging out shooting the breeze and playing melderman. The conversation got around to fitness and a couple of the 20 year olds argued over who was the fittest. It was decided a race to the first green and back ( 445 yards each way) would settle the issue. Andy, impecably dressed as usual was cajoled into challenging these two 20 year olds and several wagers were made. The two youngsters had a big lead as they arrived at the flag on the first green but Andy had closed the gap at the halfway point of the return leg coming back up the slight grade of the first fairway. At the finish the 40 year old Andy was ahead by 20-30 yards on both the youngsters as many on lookers marveled at his achievement. As was typical for Andy he was very gracious, humble and consoling to the two youngsters he just beat.

Andy  had a charming personality, loads of charisma and was well respected by his golfing friends.

Rest in peace Andy.
