Mel had a successful career as a Mechanical Engineer, which enabled him to travel the world. Mel’s professional successes were only outshone by his love and devotion to family and friends. His selfless determination to take care of his family was a driving force throughout his incredible life. He was a loving husband and partner. A supportive and protective father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a safe harbour for everyone in his life no matter what. Words cannot describe the void his passing has left behind, but he will forever be watching over us all.

Below is a tribute from Fluor on Mel's passing

Mel was hired by Fluor Daniel on December 5, 1988, and was seconded to INCO, to work as a project engineering manager reviewing concentrators and marine facilities. After completing his tenure at INCO, Mel returned to the Vancouver office as the mechanical department manager and the engineering manager for projects, with clients such as INCO and HBMS. Mel left Fluor in 1999, and was re-hired on January 17, 2005 to work on the Cero Verde project. He then became the mechanical lead on the Oyu Tolgoi Copper concentrator project, followed by being the lead for the Long Harbour Nickel processing plant project. He retired on July 12, 2016.

Mel had a wealth of knowledge due to his long experience in the industry and would patiently share it with anyone who was interested. He was an excellent supervisor, mentor, and mechanical engineer, His passion for grinding mills technology was virtually insatiable, so it was fitting that he became a subject matter expert on them. In his retirement years, he re-discovered the joy of playing the piano again and he continued being active in ballroom dancing. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Mel was one of the first people I met when I came to Vancouver from the Calgary office back in 2008 and we immediately hit it off. What I know about mills and grinding circuits I learned from Mel. Never one to judge or point fingers was one of the traits that I admired. His willingness to share his incredible knowledge and his natural curiosity questioning me on welding and materials whenever we chatted. At the time we met we had both recently lost someone close to us and we shared our stories, laughter and a few tears. Mel was someone, that looking back, I can say was one of the people I was fortunate to have worked with and privileged to call a friend. Rest in peace Mel, my prayers condolences are with your family. You will be missed!

Mel , we worked together many years and I never experienced anything but the most professional and gentlemanly conduct from you. I know you can still see us and you will receive this brief message.
You were a true professional and an exemplary colleague. My deepest condolences to your family.

Mel and I enjoyed many dances together at the studio, especially the swing. We often talked of his piano playing. My prayers are with his family and friends at this time.

I am so sorry to hear this sad news Gosia. Mel was such a lovely man and you made a lovely couple. I am sharing this photo of you two dancing in my studio in summer 2017. It's blurry, but captures the moment. My heartfelt sympathies to you and all the others mourning the loss of big Mel.
