Obituary for Ernst Bobert

Ernst Bobert
IN MEMORY OF ERNST-WILHELM (BILL) BOBERT

Ernst-Wilhelm (Bill) Bobert passed away on April 26, 2016, aged 80 years. He is lovingly remembered by his son, Donald (Bev Gorden), and grandchildren Adam, Gillian and Claire. Bill’s wife of 52 years, Elsie, passed away on January 24, 2016. Bill was born in March 1936 in Bremen, Germany. He was the third of four siblings, all of whom have now passed away. Growing up in Germany during the Second World War, Bill had a childhood that he called rough but interesting. However, many of his schoolmates were killed during 1943 – 44, and by late 1944, school ended and he spent most of his time in the bunker down the street from his house. In the final months of the war, he was deemed by the authorities to be 3 months too young to be sent to the front. In 1954, as an 18 year old, Bill enlisted as a West German border guard at the frontier with East Germany. When his term ended, he enrolled as an apprentice electrician in a technical school in Bremen. In 1956, at the age of 20, Bill decided that Canada, with its wide open spaces, was where his future lay. He emigrated to Canada with a loan from the Lutheran Church, and after travelling by ship and train, arrived in Kitimat, British Columbia. He began work at the Alcan Smelter the day after he arrived. Over the next few years, Bill learned how to speak English, finished his apprenticeship, and became a Canadian citizen. He and Elsie were married in 1963, and Donald was born in 1964. Bill loved living in Kitimat, close to nature, but by 1968, he and Elsie felt that it was time to move to Vancouver. The move was accomplished by Bill, Elsie and Donald driving from Kitimat to New York City, loading their (large) car onto a ship, tenting around Europe for 7 months, putting the car back on a ship to Montreal, and then driving to Vancouver. Bill and Elsie then purchased a two bedroom house in West Vancouver, where they lived until the months before they both passed away. From 1969 until he retired in 1997, Bill worked as an electrician in pulp, paper, and recycling mills in and around Vancouver. Bill and Elsie spent all of their vacation time in the years from 1978 to 2015 camping throughout North America in the same 1978 pickup truck and camper. They also enjoyed taking care of their grandchildren whenever possible. Bill was a kind soul, both eccentric and charming. He was devoted to Elsie, and they were never apart unless he was at work. He said in later life that all he wanted was to live one day longer than her. His was an adventurous life, well-lived. We miss him.
