Obituary for Steven Sobolewski

Steven Sobolewski
SOBOLEWSKI, STEVEN – On March 28, 2016 we said our final good byes to our dad as he left this world in search of bigger boats, faster cars and colder beer.

Born in Warsaw on October 26, 1939, Steve fled Poland on foot with his mother in 1945. He arrived in the occupied zone of Germany two weeks later, where he met his father for the first time, an air force pilot serving in the war under the RAF. His family was flown to England and in 1953, they moved to Canada, settling in Hamilton, Ontario.

In 1965, Steve completed his formal education with a law degree from University of Toronto’s Osgoode Hall. He was exposed to securities law early on as a young lawyer and quickly determined that that was his niche. In early 1970, recognizing that Vancouver was quickly becoming the mecca of emerging junior resource companies and lured by his love of the ocean and mountains, he packed his bags for the west coast. Shortly thereafter, he founded Sobolewski Anfield, a boutique law firm specializing in corporate and securities law. Steve had an innate love for doing deals and he remained a fixture on Howe Street for nearly three decades.

In addition to his successful law practice, Steve was actively involved in the Greater Vancouver charitable community, serving on several boards at various times, including the Canadian Cancer Society and BC Children’s Hospital. He was also the founding Chair of the Canadian-Polish Chamber of Commerce and the founding President of the Kopernik Foundation, which established a 90-bed seniors care residence in the 1970s.

Steve leaves behind many friends (and we’re sure a few foes) as well as his family who will forever miss his colourful and complicated personality: his two daughters, Michelle Borthwick (Anthony) and Claudine Gayton (Scott), their mother Denise, and his four grandchildren who he loved dearly – Tyler Borthwick, 16, who is a reflection of his dry wit and penchant for doing things “his way”; Jamie Marie Borthwick, 13, who shares his love and compassion for animals, particularly dogs; Sadie Gayton, 9, who shares his appreciation for the finer things; and Cooper Gayton, 7, who reminds us that a good joke, even if a little rude, is always appropriate. Together these four will ensure that Steve is always by our side.

Steve’s family would like to thank the nurses and care aides at Kiwanis Care Centre in North Vancouver, who provided exceptional care and support to Steve and his family over the last three years. A special and heart felt thank you to Steve’s private caregiver and companion, Leslie Akpomudje, who never lost sight of who Steve really was through the cloud of his dementia.

A Catholic mass will be held for Steve on April 14, 2016 at 2pm followed by a celebration of his life at the Terminal City Club from 4-6pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family would gratefully accept donations in Steve’s name to the Alzheimer’s Society of B.C.
