I had the good fortune to be articled to R.T.A. (Dick) Low in 1975-76. I then had the honor of appearing before him when he was the County Court Judge for Prince Rupert County and, later, the Supreme Court. He certainly knocked the fear of God into me about being thoroughly prepared in court, which has stood me on good stead every since.
After call I hung out my own shingle in Smithers, BC. For my first year of solo practice, and before he was elevated to our County Court, I called Dick often, often for advice. Dick was always generous with his time when I needed support.
When I was Dick's student I worked at Wilson, King most evenings and then would jog home. One night I unknowingly jogged past the scene of a gasoline-syphoning crime. The police were looking around for the thieves (who had scattered), saw me and arrested me on suspicion. I was hustled into the back of a police car and taken to the Prince George RCMP station (an experience all lawyers should share). I invoked Dick's name to the booking sergeant, who recognised the name and phoned him. Fortunately, Dick resisted the urge to have a bit of fun with the situation and explained that a person with my name and fitting my description was, indeed, his articled student and he thought it most unlkely that I would be involved in syphoning gasoline. I was released.
I was surprised and saddned to hear of his too-early passing. My sincere condolences to Gail, Oliver and the rest of Dick's family.
