Obituary for Norman Harold Kirby

Norman Harold Kirby
July 9th, 1925 – March 24th, 2021

Norman Harold Kirby was born on July 9th, 1925 in New Westminster, B.C. Norman died on March 24th, 2021 in Lions Gate Hospital with his wife, Victoria holding him.

He had a very happy childhood in North Vancouver with his father, Frederick Harold Kirby and his mother, Catherine Martin Kirby, and his brother Gordon Allan Kirby, deceased. Norman adored his young sister, Katherine Hedley, who now lives in Chilliwack, B.C.

Norman’s first job was to deliver papers in North Vancouver, which he walked until he earned enough money to purchase a used bike. He then delivered papers and groceries. Norman worked on tugboats, fish boats and in logging camps.

Norman joined the Canadian Army and was assigned to the North Shore Brunswick Regiment. Norman landed on Juno Beach on D-Day, June 6th, 1944 and fought in France, Holland, Belgium and into Germany.
By order of the President of the Republic of France, Norman was awarded the rank of Knight of the French National Order of the Legion of Honour, as of August 22, 2014.

Holland has honoured, decorated and made Norman very welcome in their country many times over the years. Norman was very honoured and proud of his service.

After the war he learned how to build, by constructing his own home in North Vancouver, now located beside the Highway #1.

Norman enjoyed business and had an excellent work ethic. He liked people. He worked in real estate, Gulf Oil agent, property management, and owned and operated rental property.

Norman always owned boats and enjoyed the BC Coast and fishing.

One of the joys of his life was travel. His favourite trip was to Antarctica.

Norman moved to Lions Bay in 1976. He loved his family, friends, his home and his life. He will be missed by many friends, family and his wife, Victoria. Norman absolutely loved his life and was always living it to the fullest.
