Obituary

Moraig Meyer (nee MacDonald), 1932—2019
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Moraig Meyer on July 13th with Richard, her husband of almost 57 years by her side. She will be lovingly remembered by Richard and their daughters, Shona (Russ) and Jenny (Nicholas), and by her “sun, moon, and stars”, her grandchildren, Ross, Keith, Siobhan, and Grace. Born to Adam and Margaret MacDonald of Ellon, Scotland, she was one of seven children. Moraig is also survived by her brother Denis (Marion) and many nieces, nephews, and cousins—in Scotland and Canada—of whom she was very proud.

After graduating from the University of Aberdeen in 1951, Moraig earned her teaching degree from Maria Grey College, a London University affiliate, and taught in London for five years before immigrating to Canada. She was a respected teacher of English, French, and Latin at Sardis Junior High in Sardis, Balmoral Junior High in North Vancouver and the YMCA College in West Vancouver. She was an engaging educator who took pride in making a positive impact on her students’ lives.

Moraig and Richard married in 1962 and settled in West Vancouver to raise their girls. She loved music, opera, ballet, theatre, reading, and duplicate bridge. She cherished her friends, having made many deep and lasting bonds throughout her lifetime. Even in her final weeks, she continued to connect with new people. Moraig loved to laugh and had a stellar sense of humour. She felt that she had been the luckiest person because she had been surrounded by such wonderful friends and family. They meant everything to her, and she was grateful for their love and care especially in her final months. Her joie de vivre touched many lives, and although she is gone, her spirit lives on.

Moraig’s family would like to thank Dr. Mainra, Dr. Sebba, Dr. Senra, and the staff at Churchill House for their kind and caring support. A Celebration of Life will be held at Delbrook Community Centre (Arbutus Room) in North Vancouver on Saturday, August 31st from 2 to 4pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the BC Lung Association, The Heart and Stroke Foundation, or the Alzheimer Society of BC. Finally, as Moraig loved bright, happy colours, please wear something cheerful for her.
