Obituary for Penny Kurz

Marie Penelope “Penny” Kurz (Hayes)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Penny Kurz in the afternoon of Sunday February 13, 2022. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving and adoring family.

Penny was born on January 27, 1947 in Vancouver, BC to Archibald and Lilian (Gibbons) Hayes. In 1967 she married her love Gunter Kurz at St. Michael’s Church in Vancouver. They went on to raise three children together. She worked as a key punch operator at Woodward’s before becoming the secretary of the family business, Hollyburn Plumbing & Heating, for 45 years in West and North Vancouver.

Penny loved to bake for family and friends, listen to music, putter around her garden and care for her hummingbirds. She always remembered your birthday or anniversary and sent greeting cards every year. Penny regularly talked of her treasured travels to Hawaii, California, Florida, Turks and Caicos, Delft, Neckarwestheim and Lake Como.

She was a kind, generous and thoughtful person who will be greatly missed by her neighbours, longtime friends and family.

Penny is survived by her loving family: husband of 54 years, Gunter; children Lisa, Ryan (Lana) and Jennifer (Shawn); grandchildren Amber and Sienna; sister Maureen (Bob); goddaughter/niece Kelly and cousin Marliyn (Zolt).

The family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers and home care nurses who assisted in Penny’s well-being while at home, as well as the nurses and staff at the North Shore Hospice for their kindness and compassion during her final hours.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the BC Cancer Agency or Coastal Palliative Care.

A private service will be held at St. Francis-in-the-Wood Church, West Vancouver on March 21, 2022 at 2pm.
