Obituary for Margaret Pollock Mitchell (Fraser)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Margaret Pollock Mitchell (née Fraser) on Sunday, September 5th, 2021 at the age of 80.

Margaret was born in Airdrie, Scotland, the daughter of Archibald Fraser of Airdrie, Scotland and Margaret Fraser (née Rae) of Airdrie, Scotland. Margaret was a wife to Thomas, sister to Morag and mother to Gillian and Melanie. She was a loving and much-beloved Gran to Sarah, Claire, Emma and William.

Margaret grew up in Scotland and married at 21 to Thomas whom she had met at the age of 16. As a couple, they moved briefly to Wales before returning to Scotland to start their family. A few years later they moved again and settled in the East Riding of Yorkshire to complete their family and raise their two girls. Margaret found great satisfaction working in architecture practices when her daughters were older.

Her love of golf and travel was equal and often enjoyed together. She and Thomas had the opportunity to spend time travelling in both the UK and France with their golf clubs and a spirit of adventure. She was the Lady Captain of her local golf club and during that year showed her leadership spirit and commitment to holding life to a high standard.

Following Thomas’ death Margaret retired and spent time traveling the world - literally - to see her daughters and welcome her grandchildren. She eventually moved to Vancouver, Canada to live with her daughter Gillian where once again, she made a positive contribution to the church, golf, bridge and book club communities with her open and welcoming smile.

Margaret’s legacy will be her kind and beautiful spirit. This was most recently apparent in her absolute joy and love she had for her four grandchildren. She travelled the world visiting them and, despite the distance, maintained a close and involved relationship with all of them as their ‘Scottish Granny’.

The example Margaret set for others with her kind and loving demeanor will more than live on in her family. She will be sadly missed and always in our hearts.

In lieu of flowers, her family asks for donations to be made in her name to the North Shore Hospice, North Vancouver.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held on September 25th at 3:30pm at the West Vancouver United Church. All who knew and loved Margaret are welcome to attend.
