Obituary for Kenneth Sheung Shun Kaan

With deep sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of Dr. Kenneth Sheung Shun Kaan at home in West Vancouver on July 25, 2023 at the age of 82, surrounded by loving family.

Ken was born on November 15, 1940 in Hong Kong during the Second World War. After completing high school from Diocesan Boys’ School and serving as second prefect during his matriculation year, he entered the Medical School of the University of Hong Kong in 1961. While at the Medical School, he also met his future wife, May Chan, a fellow medical student two years his junior. In 1968, he immigrated to Canada arriving in Montreal where he did his residency in radiology at McGill University.

Ken and May married on March 29, 1969 in Montreal and in 1972, the couple relocated to Vancouver where their sons were born. Ken became one of the city’s first neuroradiologists. Highly competent at his work, he was appointed a staff member at the radiology department of Vancouver General Hospital, and taught residents there. He left to serve at the Royal Columbian Hospital in 1978.

Not only did Ken practice his profession with excellence and devotion, but he also pursued his hobbies with the same passion, which included collecting and listening to classical music, extensive reading, playing tennis and practicing tai chi. He enjoyed shopping for the best deal, ordering food at Chinese restaurants, playing Boggle, Jumble and bridge, and cruising the world in his retirement.

While known to be blessed with a brilliant mind, beneath a stoic veneer, Ken was a kind and compassionate man, especially to his patients. He was a filial son, loving husband, father, brother and uncle, delighting the children at family gatherings with the “crazy handshake” and posing as the feared “monster”. Generous giving was also a big part of who he was, especially when it came to food, music and books.

Ken is survived by his beloved wife, May, his two sons, Albert (Victoria Lee) and Raymond (Meghan McLennan), and his three sisters, Angela, June (Malcolm Mitchell), and Juliana (Philip Lo), as well as dear nieces and nephew, Jessica Lo Ibarra, Andrea Schneller Lo and Ian Mitchell.

He will be greatly missed by all.
