Obituary for Josef Anton Scheu

Josef (‘Joe’) Anton Scheu passed away peacefully on March 8th 2022 at age 89. He is survived by the love of his life, wife Anna who he was married to for 65 years. He will be dearly missed by his three sons John (Nicola), Glenn (Tracey) and Michael (Rae-lynn). A beloved ‘Opa’ to his grandchildren Ryan, Jacob and Jenna; his passing will be mourned by other family members and friends, both locally and in Germany. Additionally, the family dogs Marley and Loki will feel the absence of Joe.

Joe and Anna married in 1956 and immigrated to Canada from Germany straight away. Living in Burnaby since 1961, Joe was a longstanding member of the community and continued to live with Anna in the same family home in North Burnaby where they raised their sons, up until his passing. Working at Canadian Uniform for the majority of his worklife he was a well-respected, hardworking and deeply valued employee. He and Anna would spend their leisure time at the Vancouver Alpen Club/Klub Erika dancing, having a meal out, playing cards, going on local excursions or socializing with other friends they met over the years. Joe was an avid gardener and worker, whose pride was very much evident in anything he spent his time doing.

Throughout the years watching his sons/grandchildren play sports was an immense pleasure for Joe, he was a great lover of sports, especially soccer. Anna and Joe could often be found standing on the sidelines of many a soccer, football, baseball, lacrosse game to cheer on their sons/grandchildren’s participation. Growing up the boys spent many weekends travelling to Coqutilam to watch the Westwood Car Races with their Dad. Summers were spent camping in Osoyoos for many years or travelling back to Germany for family trips.

After his retirement from work, Joe could often be found walking the trails of the Burnaby Mountain Golf course daily with his since departed big brother Al, along with various canine companions. A quiet but extremely loyal and kind man, Joe was most happy spending time with his family or helping Anna with various projects around the house. Great appreciation from the family is extended to the Burnaby Hospital Nurses and Physicians who cared for Joe in the final week of his life. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Burnaby Hospital Foundation or charity of your choice.
