Obituary

Haley, John James October 18, 1954 – March 2, 2019

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of John Haley on March 2, 2019, surrounded by his cherished family. John will be deeply missed by his wife, Dr. Marnie Shkwarok; devoted son Peter and his girlfriend Jessica Donnan; brothers Dr. Lawrence Haley (Linda) and Harry (Phyllis); nieces and nephews; many dear relatives and friends. Predeceased by his parents Patrick and Brita.

John attended Washington State University on a track scholarship where he earned his degree in electrical engineering in 1978. Shortly after graduation, he joined BC Hydro where he was employed until his passing.

John faced ocular melanoma with remarkable equanimity. A heartfelt thanks to Dr. Katherine Paton, Dr. Cory Metcalf and Dr. Ingrid McFee for their compassionate care.

Prayers will be held on Friday, March 15 at 8:00 p.m. and Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, March 16 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Anthony’s Parish 2347 Inglewood Avenue, West Vancouver.

John was a long-time supporter of renal charities. If desired, friends may make memorial donations to the St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation, Renal Program “In memory of John Haley.”

I was saddened to hear of John's passing, and share condolences with his family. I recall meeting John early in my career at BC Hydro, about 18 years ago, when he joined the Telecom Engineering department as a Project Manager. John's cheerful personality, and sense of humour stuck with me from that time, and as my career intertwined with his over the next two decades I learned to appreciate and look forward to the pearls of wisdom, life and career inspiration he liked to share - often in the form of cartoons and comics at the start of his presentations.

John and I shared many lively and energetic debates over the years, often looking at the same problem from two different perspectives, though with the common goal of coming up with the best solution to problem or opportunity. To this end, I am certain we were successful.

I will miss John's smile and welcoming nature in the office, and the chance to tackle some more of the days puzzles and problems with him.

My deepest condolences. In the 20+ years I worked with John he freely shared his technical knowledge and experience with others, and was always striving for the best solution. I remember him as a friend, and will miss him.

My deepest condolences to John's family.
I always found John to be a great person to communicate with. His passion for BCHydro and for the work that we did always came out.
I wasn’t always in agreement with John on some work topics. But, agree or disagree, I always enjoyed the discussions we would have. He was always calm to talk to, respectful, would listen, and would professionally share his reasoning and wisdom. He genuinely cared about what we do. He was always a man with a kind and caring heart. John’s passion and presence will be greatly missed.
