Obituary for Gerhard Paul Kelpin

Gerhard Paul Kelpin passed away peacefully in his sleep on, August 14, 2020. He was born on October 7, 1935 in Heiligensee, Germany. He lives on in the memories of his son Frank (Barbara), grandsons Stefan and Garrett; twin brother Heinz (Margot) and family; as well as many friends in Canada and Germany. He was predeceased by his parents Frieda and Heinrich as well as his wife Elsbeth.

Dear Dad,

A year has passed since you joined mama in heaven.

As a young boy in Germany, you spent your days side by side with your brother Heinz enjoying the simple things in life such as swimming in the lake or playing soccer.

Your love of music and dancing is how you met mama, the love of your life; you were 17 and she was 18. This began a 65 year relationship (58 of which were in marriage).

In the summer of 1960, you and mama immigrated to North Vancouver, and settled in Lynn Valley. Continuing the bond with your twin brother, our two families-built homes next door to each other. This house on Mill Street was your forever home.

You found your calling in the elevator trade spending over 30 years in all aspects of the industry.

You loved spending time with your family.

Travelling with family and friends was always something that you looked forward to with great joy. Germany, Tahiti, Cuba, Mexico, Rocky Mountains, many places in the US including Memphis, Oregon, San Francisco, Disneyland, cruising to Hawaii and Alaska, just to name a few.

After developing dementia, we started the process of a very long “goodbye”. Along with Barbie and the boys, we tried to give you the best care we could so that you could stay in your forever home. These days were lived in the moment and were simple, filled with love, laughter, and compassion. I’ll especially miss the time we spent watching hockey or going to McDonald’s for breakfast on the weekends.

You will be remembered for your sense of humour and your giving spirit. You lived a full life.

On the anniversary of your passing, we honour the memory of a truly special man.

We Love you, dad. You’ll always and forever be in our hearts.

Love, your son

Frank
