Obituary for Christine Curran

On Wednesday, December 2, 2020, Christine Jean Amilia Curran, loving wife, mother of four children and grandmother to five, passed away peacefully at home in North Vancouver, British Columbia, at the age of 75.

Christine was preceded in death by her father and mother, Frank and Amalia Priatel, her older brother Edward Priatel and her devoted husband, Paul EJ Curran. She is survived by her children, Sean & his wife Shauna and their children Jack & Samantha; Stephen & his wife Shubha and their children Rohan & Nikita; Jason & his wife Lauren and their daughter Lyla; Carly & her fiancé Robin; her brother Frank Priatel & his wife Belinda; and, a large and loving extended family and many friends.

Christine grew up near the banks of Porcupine Lake in South Porcupine (Timmins), Ontario, before attending the St. Patrick’s College in Ottawa (which became part of Carleton University), where she graduated with a teaching degree in 1967. Together with her beloved husband Paul, they lived and worked in Ottawa and Kingston, Ontario in the succeeding years, before making the adventurous trek west to Edmonton, Alberta in 1978, with three young boys in tow. While in Edmonton, in addition to raising her three boys and welcoming her daughter Carly in 1988, Christine became an active member of the local community league, including as an executive when the Mill Woods Golf Course in Edmonton was established.

In 2014, Christine sold the family home in Edmonton and continued West to join her son Stephen and his family in their home in North Vancouver, B.C. Within a short period of time, Christine came to know all of her new neighbours and became a well-known fixture on the dog-walking circuit in Central Lonsdale in North Vancouver. When the newly-installed pickleball courts in Mahon Park were being planned by the City of North Vancouver, Christine successfully lobbied the City and her neighbours to gain support for an off-leash dog area - an amenity that the community now enjoys.

Family and friends will remember her as a devoted mother, lover of dogs and an active and vocal community member. She loved people and she engendered a feeling of trust and comfort in all those with whom she dealt - from friends to perfect strangers. She was truly one-of-a-kind and she will be sorely missed by all.

Her family would like to offer their sincere appreciation and heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Paul Sugar for his extraordinary support and guidance through the last several months. To commemorate Christine’s steadfast passion for animal welfare, the family requests donations in lieu of flowers to the Second Chance Animal Rescue Society (www.scarscare.ca) or the Humane Society International (www.hsi.org).
